The New Theatre presents the Irish premier of “Lear’s Shadow, Colin Hurley’s one-man take on King Lear.
A man in a dressing gown shuffles in, carrying a box. From the box he pulls the objects, people, mistakes, laughter and regrets that add up to a life. This is an old fool of an actor sniffing around Shakespeare’s great play. This is dreamtime, playtime, clown time. At the end of Shakespeare’s play Lear dies. His last words are “Look, there.” So what happens after you die? Well, that’s where this show starts.
Colin Hurley has acted in Shakespeare plays with The Royal National Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Globe Theatre, as well with other theatres and in other plays. He has also appeared in film and TV across a fifty year career.
‘Hurley delivers a surprising, irresistibly human and comic Lear. This is more an ordinary man with a man’s vanities and vulnerabilities, yet there is an air of decayed nobility about him.’ **** British Theatre Guide
‘ A superb one-man performance…Throughout the 70-minute performance.
Hurley captivates’ **** Theatre and Arts Review
‘Hurley’s performance is a tour de force… He engaged with the audience brilliantly.. well worth watching.’ North West End
Produced by Andy Crook.
