Watch Sport this Weekend in Dublin Town
Written by The first Sunday in September is a staple in every Irish sports fan’s diary given the All-Ireland Hurling Final falls on
the first Sunday of September every year but that is only one of three unmissable sporting events this weekend. The mouth watering weekend for any Irish sports fan begins on Saturday when Ireland play their final game in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup as they take on England at Twickenham. Then at five Dublin take on Mayo in the All-Ireland football semi-final replay at Croke Park, while on Sunday Brian Cody’s Kilkenny bid for back to back All-Ireland Hurling titles as they take on Galway.
On Saturday Ireland’s head coach Joe Schmidt
(who recently acquired Irish citizenship) takes his side to Twickenham to take on England. If Ireland are victorious they may struggle to pull the wool over many eyes that see them as possible winners of the World Cup starting later this month in England. After naming his squad earlier this week, Joe Schmidt will be hoping his sides performance will mute any disagreement with his world cup squad selection. Irish fans hope Schmidt’s meticulous nature in his preparations in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup, will see him find his pot of gold, the gold in his case being the Webb Ellis trophy. At five on Saturday Dublin need to overcome a disappointing finish
to last weeks draw against Mayo. Dublin failed to score in the last fourteen minutes of the game resulting in a Mayo comeback. Dublin’s lack of competitive action in Leinster through no fault of their own nearly caught up with them. Mayo unlike Leinster opposition did not fold when Dublin took what looked to be a commanding lead of seven points with ten minutes to go. Watching last weeks game one thing still stands out about this Dublin side, considering Dublin’s forwards are regarded as an elite force, why do they need their goal keeper to take frees? (This was overheard on a dingle horse carriage after Sunday’s drawn replay, as a Kerry side await the winners in the All-Ireland Final.) A missed free late on by Dublin legend Stephen Cluxton could of proved the difference between the two sides but unfortunately this time Cluxton was wide of the mark. With Croke Park set for another sell out for the replay it’s a great day for the G.A.A and the fans, as last weeks draw proved to be fascinating viewing. Finally we round off a fantastic weekend of sport with the first
Sunday in September fixture being the All-Ireland Hurling Final. The twenty first century has seen Brian Cody’s Kilkenny become a familiar sight on All-Ireland Hurling final day with no fewer than twelve appearances and ten victories so far this century.
