Born in Pozoblanco, a small town in rural Córdoba, María José Llergo has grown into one of the most compelling figures in contemporary flamenco. Her sound draws from the tradition’s deepest roots, particularly cante jondo , while weaving in R&B and electronic production.
Her debut EP, Sanación (2020), established her as an artist with a clear point of view. Themes of identity, cultural memory, and injustice ran through the record, underpinned by melismatic vocals and atmospheric production rooted in Romani cultural consciousness.
The full-length Ultrabelleza followed in 2023 to widespread critical acclaim. Rolling Stone included it among the 50 best Spanish-language albums of the year, while The New York Times praised her unapologetic commitment to her Andalusian heritage.
Her profile has grown steadily off the back of the music too. A Loewe campaign alongside Rossy de Palma in 2022 marked a cultural milestone, and two A Colors Show sessions — La Luz and Tu Piel — extended her reach internationally. Earlier this year, her Tiny Desk Concert surpassed 388,000 views within two months of release.
