Brian Cleary, RCSI Honorary Professor and Pharmacy Executive Manager at the Rotunda Hospital, will present Gibbet Hill, the story of his extraordinary discovery of a long-lost short story by Bram Stoker, author of Dracula and brother of William Thornley Stoker, former RCSI Professor of Anatomy and President.

Brian’s journey began in 2021, when sudden hearing loss led to cochlear implant surgery. While retraining his hearing, he visited the National Library of Ireland to explore his passion for historical literature and uncovered this hidden gem.

Before his death, Stoker had planned three short story collections. Only one appeared, published posthumously by his wife; Brian believes Gibbet Hill was intended for one of the others.

The find led to a unique book launched in October 2024, with proceeds supporting the Charlotte Stoker Fund for research into preventable deafness in newborns.

Joining Brian for the evening’s panel are Paul Murray, Stoker’s pre-eminent biographer, and acclaimed visual artist Paul McKinley, who will share insights into their contributions to the book.

The talk begins at 18:00. RCSI look forward to welcoming visitors to their home on York Street this Culture Night.
