The Black Hat Tattoo – Creative Excellence in The Heart of Dublin One
DublinTown has a vast array of independent businesses who specialise in their trade. We recently met with Sergy and Helene, the talented duo behind The Black Hat Tattoo of Parnell Street in Dublin One.
The Black Hat Tattoo, which is located at 11/12 Parnell Street in Dublin 1, studio opened two years ago and is a collective of artists who collaborate in the pursuit of the same values – that being the delivery of excellence in tattoo artistry.
Having over 20 years’ experience under his belt Sergy is an expert when it comes to precision and standards: “We are keen to educate people around standards in the industry. When you opt for a cheaper option you may end up paying dearly for it in the long run. We pride ourselves on our high standards and work tirelessly to ensure that our customers are cared for properly”.
This is a sentiment very much echoed by Helene “Approximately 60—70% of our customer base is between the age of 18-25. A tattoo is permanent and as such is something that deserves thought and consideration both in terms of the design and the artist you choose to create it. Our advice is to take your time and do your research.
“We recommend you browse the artist’s portfolio online – on a big screen, not on your phone as you need to be able to inspect the details both up close and from a distance. One thing to check is if the lines are straight – this is essential to ensuring the integrity and sharpness of the design and are an indication of the artist’s skills.”
When asked about the most popular tattoo designs Helene says “classic designs are still hugely popular – animals, flowers, butterflies, birds etc. Many people visiting Ireland ask for shamrocks. That said I have never seen the same design twice! Each artist interprets the design and any meaning behind it differently, so a tattoo is as individual as the person seeking it.”
Sergy who is originally from Latvia and Helene who is French are both passionate about the Dublin One area. They believe this part of the city is transforming and a lot of very exciting businesses and people are being attracted into the area as a result. Sergy and Helene both love Hot Bubble Café on Capel Street who they say serve the best cappuccino and lunch. They are also fans of The Black Sheep on Capel Street and Cucina on Parnell Street.
They consider themselves very lucky to be located next door to Michael Duffy Antiques, which is a treasure trove full of beauties from yesteryear. Having Cineworld directly across the street from their studio is also a great source of escape and inspiration!
