colin mulcahyDublin Fashion Festival and Canon Ireland last night crowned Lisa Griffin from Tipperary as the Canon Young Fashion Photographer of the Year. Lisa was announced as the overall winner at a live fashion show and exhibition at College Green in front of over 300 people. Lisa will now receive €500 worth of Canon products and a money can’t buy experience at London Fashion. She will be flown courtesy of CityJet to London and will have the chance to photograph a fashion show featuring some of the best known labels and models in the fashion industry with some of Canon’s top equipment. In its inaugural year, the Canon Young Fashion Photographer of the Year has been accepting applications from budding young fashion photographers across the country throughout the summer months. Entries were appraised by an esteemed panel of judges including Bairbre Power, fashion editor of the Irish Independent, Barry McCall, internationally renowned fashion photographer, Dave McKane, principal from the Institute of Photography and Jonothan Sultan, marketing manager of Canon Ireland.

The judges shortlisted five of the country’s best and brightest young fashion photographers to attend the event and have their works exhibited. On announcement, a 30 metre print of Lisa’s winning photograph was unveiled on the Bank of Ireland on College Green, and Lisa joined hosts Brendan Courtney and Sonia Lennon on stage to accept her prize.

Speaking after the event, Lisa was elated with the news “I’ve always had a massive interest in photography and particularly fashion photography so it’s amazing to have won this competition. It’s so exciting to think that in two weeks I’ll be at London Fashion Weekend shooting top designer fashion shows and experiencing the madness of London Fashion Weekend!”

Jonothan Sultan, marketing manager from Canon Ireland was delighted with the standard of the applications and the overall competition, “Entries far exceeded our expectation, in both quantity and quality. The other judges and I had a difficult time selecting a shortlist of only five people from the masses of entries, and we’re delighted to be able to give such talented amateur photographers this opportunity as they start out their careers. With fashion and photography having stronger link than ever before, it was a natural fit to partner with DFF on this and give exciting opportunities and exposure to the finalists and our winner.”

Griffin_7482In addition to the competition, Canon Ireland will also be hosting a number of free photography talks over the course of this week with hints and tips from professional photographers. Friday and Saturday will see professional photographers giving top tips at live events on Henry Street and Grafton Street, and there are also a number of promotional offers on Canon products in key retailers throughout the city over the course of the festival.

Clyde Carroll Director of the Festival said “Dublin Fashion Festival is excited this year to have Canon Ireland on board as official camera partner. Photography and fashion are intrinsically linked now more than ever so we welcome the opportunity to further champion emerging talent in fashion through this new competition. This added dimension and the extension of the festival to a full week only cements our place as one of the key dates in the Irish fashion calendar.”
