Abbey Street derives its name from the historic Cistercian Abbey of St. Mary that once stretched through the north of the city and was known back in the 18th Century as Great Abbey Street.
It ended at what was then known as Drogheda Street, which today is now O’Connell Street. Upper and Middle Abbey Street are the oldest sections of Abbey Street as much of Lower Abbey Street was laid out and constructed in the 19th Century.
