4 Classic Dublin Winter Drinks:
Because of the brutal winter’s in Ireland, we have mastered the art of making hot drinks to combat the freezing weather, and these four are (in my opinion) the most iconic of them all.
Spiced Cider:
Spiced Cider is a drink enjoyed over all of Europe, and has been for centuries. It comes from the Southwest of England and comes from an older drink called wassail.
Spiced cider is as it’s name suggests, it is heated apple cider with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise and orange slices.
Hot Chocolate:
Hot Chocolate originally comes from the bottom of North America, where people would drink a more bitter version made from cacao beans, when Spanish explorers went over, they took the drink and added sugar to make it sweeter, then the Irish physician Sir Hans Sloan had the idea of adding milk to the drink to make it better, thus making the drink we all know and love today.
I doubt I need to explain what is in hot chocolate, but just in case, it usually consists of simple ingredients like cocoa, milk/water and a sweetener.
Irish Coffee:
Irish coffee was created by Joe Sheridan as a way to refresh travellers who had travelled a long way by plane, he first served the drink in 1943 and it has been a hit ever since.
It is an alcoholic and caffeinated beverage made of coffee, whiskey and cream.
Mulled Wine:
Mulled Wine first started in ancient Rom where they would add honey, pepper, bay leaves and dates to preserve their wines, this tradition then carried over to Greece in the Middle Ages and the Victorian Era, and now is a classic Christmas time drink.
It is a heated red wine with cinnamon, cloves, star anise and a sweetener like sugar or honey.
