Two episodes of Ulysses are set in the area once known as Monto, Dublin’s historic red-light district. When the Joyce family moved to nearby Fitzgibbon Street in 1893, the young James Joyce became fascinated by the neighbourhood and its “vastness and strangeness of life” — an impression that would later shape his writing.

On this walking tour, we go back to 1904 and explore the history of Monto while tracing the steps of Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus at the end of their long day in Ulysses. Along the way, there will be short readings from the novel and related works to bring the streets to life.

The tour begins near The Spire and finishes beside the Custom House. The tour will be guided by John O’Connell an and will last for approximately 90 minutes.
