Grand Stretch
There’s no “I” in Theatre.
TheatreSports™ is a high-octane improv showdown, fuelled by spontaneous scene challenges, team spirit, and the rising heat a live audience brings to the game.
Created in the 1970s by Keith Johnstone with Loose Moose Theatre Co., TheatreSports™ took the world by storm in the ’80s and ’90s. Light entertainment be damned! This is true competition that pushes improvisers to take risks, thrilling audiences with the unpredictability of scenes and scores. Win some, lose some — one thing’s for sure: when the spirit is right in this game, failure becomes its own reward.
Each show features a few matches, each with its own rules and surprises.
In a match, two teams face off across a series of high-stakes rounds. They take turns setting challenges — say, “do a scene with a lie” — but must always meet their own challenge first, before their opponents take it on. That means we’ll always see two creative takes on the same challenge, with scenes sparked by audience suggestions. There’s always a winner (and a loser) in every round. But how the teams adapt to their score over the course of a show? That’s the unpredictable magic of TheatreSports™.
