Paul Quin has been making strange and melodic electronic music since the first half of the 1980s.
He early discovered a route to delivering the hardest teenage and later adult emotions, confusions and joys to lush synthesiser melodies and analogue beats. What we now call ‘Electronica’ was in embryo back then.
Paul fronted ‘Biazzare’ (with John Butler) whose ‘A Better Place’ single lit up Irish airwaves in the 1990s. During which time he ‘cameoed’ in Alan Parker’s ‘The Committments’, the only ‘queer’ character in that movie!
In the 2000s after a series of bone crushing losses Paul Quin released an EP on People Sound. One of the first online record labels.
This led to him signing with Ninthwave Records in the US and recording the mini album ‘Future Songs’ with Bill Shanley and Ciaran Byrne at the famous Cauldron Studios in the North Inner City.
After buying a home and a hiatus as a team leader in a city centre office, Paul quit and returned to music with his first full length solo album, the highly acclaimed ‘LIFE ON EARTH’ released by Scent Air records. A series of singles and music videos and a HOT PRESS video premier of the single ‘Everything I Loved I Lost That Day’ which was a Christmas number one on the Radio Indie Alliance and led to an artist nomination with Radio Wigwam in London in 2024.
More recently he and artist pal Francis Fay were the subject of ‘BEAUTIFUL’, an autobiographical spoken and sung piece based on interviews with the great Dublin songwriter Seán Millar who was commissioned by Bealtaine Festival to create an opening night piece for 2025 in that city’s Project Arts Centre theatre.
And NOW, the forthcoming second album
HIVEMIND has been the pinnacle of Paul Quin’s songwriting and recording career (so far) with legendary UK producer Mark Saunders (Bowie, Siouxsie, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Kevin Rowland) stepping out of semi retirement to co-write and produce three glorious tracks.
Eamonn ‘J-Wookie’ Barrett (formerly of Royseven fame) has co-written and produced the four disco bangers that form the spine of the record (including upcoming single ‘Dancing With The Devil’) and Punk godfather Pete Holidai producing a 20th anniversary cover of MGMT favourite ‘Kids’.
Friends happily helped out including Dec Quinn (Republic Of Loose) Gav Moran (orchestral arranger) Colm Key (Frozen Stares) and Aidan Casserly (Empire State Human) along with Greg Malocca who painstakingly recorded all the vocal layers and mixed the album with Paul Quin.
J-Wookie and dance music legend Dean Sherry have produced old skool house remixes of the forthcoming singles from the album.
It has taken Paul Quin all this time to understand and accept that he is a folk songwriter and singer delightfully trapped in a Matrix of lush, glamorous synth pop music that dares you NOT to go there but invites you in!
