Bewley’s Cafe Grafton St Reopens

  • Thu, 27 Aug 2020

The iconic landmark cafe reopens today, Thursday 27th August

We were delighted to wake up in DublinTown today to see Ireland’s much-loved café, Bewley’s Grafton St. reopen its doors!

The iconic café has been part of the fabric of Grafton St. since 1927 and the running of Bewley’s Grafton St. is a true family affair with three generations of the Campbell family involved in the business.

Welcoming the opening, acclaimed artist and owner of Bewley’s Grafton St., Paddy Campbell said “Like many of you, lockdown gave me a lot of time to think and reflect on what’s precious in this life. I’m 78 years old, born and bred in inner-city Dublin. I’ve lived through many recessions and recoveries and seen Ireland grow and change, for the good and for the not-so-good. And what emerged from my turmoil was the determination that this recovery from Covid should be culture and values led. I’m so proud of the contribution that our beloved Bewley’s Café has made to the life of our city and country – as a gathering place, a crucible for the arts, a second home. As an icon and a beacon. We’ve lost so much that was unique and authentic to our community and we are all poorer for it. This time, the economic story cannot be the sole focus as we rebuild ourselves. And so, we will pay the heavy price… to live our values, preserve our heritage, and keep this beautiful Café open in the beating heart of Dublin. We look forward to welcoming our wonderful customers back through the doors from today.”

Coffee lovers will be able to once again relax and unwind in the familiar and comforting surroundings of the café which have been a haven for Dubliners and visitors to the city for many years. A creative hub for writers, musicians, poets and artists, many famous faces have passed through the doors including Bob Geldof who penned the hit song ‘Rat Trap’ for The Boomtown Rats in the café.

And really great news is also that the team, all familiar faces from before the closure, have been rehired.

Bewley’s Grafton St. will initially open with table service and offer a limited menu which has been curated with the customer in mind. The menu will feature some of Bewley’s most beloved items including teas, coffees, delicious pastries, sticky buns, mouth-watering cakes and its famous cherry and almond buns!

The café experience has been modified to allow for reduced capacity and social distancing. While the experience has had to be adapted, the team at Bewley’s can guarantee top class service and a friendly and warm welcome to everyone coming into the café.

Reservations can be made at the door of the café and the team looks forward to welcoming people back through the doors over the coming weeks.
