Opera in the Open returns this August 2019

The popular event is returning to the Amphitheatre, Wood Quay starting on August 1st from 1pm – 2pm with Mozart’s masterful ‘The Impresario’. Immerse yourself in colourful and dramatic mini opera performances that are free to attend
Brought to you by Dublin City Council, Opera in the Open is celebrating its 20th season this summer. This year’s programme presents the rich operatic works of Mozart, Stravinsky, Donizetti and Gounod. Performers will transform into dramatic characters in colourful costumes to take the audience into a world of thrilling theatrics. Performers for this season include outstanding soprano singer Sandra Oman, Simon Morgan, bass-baritone Rory Dunne, soprano Sylvia O’Brien, Owen Gilhooly and well-known actress Mary McEvoy who also directs a number of performances.
Dublin City Council advises people to get there early as over 1,000 generally attend each powerful performance.
“Take this opportunity to bring your lunch outside and into the sounds of Ireland’s most beautiful singers and storytellers. We want to show that opera is for all. The amphitheatre is transformed into a place of discovery where you are transported to a different world of wonder for one hour every Thursday.” said Ray Yeates, Arts Officer, Dublin City Council.
Musical Director David Wray said, “20 years ago I was given a brief by Dublin City Council envisioning accessible opera performances for everyone, with a view to demystifying the belief that opera is elitist. We feel that over the years we have achieved this balance. Growing a regular audience while still getting hundreds of new faces each year, truly shows the interest Dublin has in all forms of art and performance. Our magical city is happy to take in all forms of culture and this year we hope to display a range of inclusive and entertaining opera presentations for folks from all over.”
