A Printing Wonderland with Debora Ando
Recently, I was invited along to take part in Debora Ando‘s ‘Etching and Drypoint Day Course’ in her beautiful studio in Cow’s Lane, Temple Bar. I’ve always been into art, but had never tried either techniques, and to be honest, I had to look up etching and drypoint beforehand, so that I wasn’t completely clueless.
The studio itself, right in the centre of the city is quiet and cosy, a charming place to spend a few hours making prints and chatting, with regular tea and biscuit breaks along the way. The day-long course began with an introduction to both styles of printing, thankfully, so I understood what I was doing step by step in advance. The process was really interesting, in particular the hard ground etching and the techniques involved.
After our quick introduction, we set about picking images to use for our own etchings. I started with a tree, and later adding a giant hare, peeking out from the branches. Debora brought us through composition and the various techniques involved, guiding us along each step. It was then time to chose our colours and get printing, which is always the fun part. We had time to experiment with colours and printed a few times, to get it just right. The first half of the day flew by, and we had three prints to show before 1pm, which was pretty impressive.
We broke for lunch and came back to try the hard ground etching. This time I chose a retro illustration of a lady with a curly wig, which didn’t turn out as well as my tree and hare combo but, I was still pretty happy. It was surprising how, with so little experience, the results were actually quite good, and this was undoubtedly from the expert help along the way!
The whole day was so enjoyable; Debora is enthusiastic, helpful and created a really relaxing atmosphere for the class. I came out of the studio feeling really delighted with my creations, and now that I have the basics, I would love to go back and do some more classes to improve.
There is a range of classes on offer including: an etching weekend or six week courses, one day card making workshops and greener lithography workshops, a really sweet Christmas present for someone special. Debora is now offering beautiful gift vouchers starting from €50, something I’d love to get to boost my creative mojo!
