DublinTown Interviews Neal Magee – 101 Talbot
We popped into Neal Magee, Head Chef and Owner of 101 Talbot to find out what his perfect day in DublinTown would be…
On my perfect day in Dublin I would definitely visit The Bison Bar as they have a great menu served in company of truly amazing whiskey. In a very easy-going atmosphere, it is a perfect place to relax with a paper.
The Winding Stair is also worth stopping at as it boasts simple yet tasty food and the beautiful surroundings. You can simply tune out and watch the River Liffey peacefully flowing under the Ha’Penny Bridge. The vibe of that place is casual, quite similar to 101 Talbot, which I really like about that place.
Another spot is Le Bon Crubeen in Talbot St, famous for its award-wining cuisine, I visit it on a regular basis. When looking for a pint, my pick would be The Brew Dock, which offers beer enthusiasts a lot of craft labels.
As a dad, I like bringing my kids to Dublin Zoo, perfect for small explorers to discover the animal world. We definitely make sure to come round cultural gems such as The Wax Museum, Museum of Archaeology, Natural History Museum and Museum of Art and Design. These are the must-visit spots for all families as they have great programmes that would make everyone excited to visit.
I think 101 Restaurant is all about good atmosphere that makes you feel welcome and at home. The restaurant itself opened 23 years ago so now together with the Italian Connections we have been the oldest eateries here. My adventure started 11 years ago as a head chef and I have been in here since then, taking over this foodie gem with my wife Jenny a few years ago. We always keep everything simple and unpretentious.
We do our best to know our customers, many of whom are locals dropping by on their way to the Gate or Abbey Theatre. As a result, there is this sense of community and mutual support that embraces the whole area. The Earl Bakery in North Earl St supplies us with bread and pastries whereas O’Brien’s Hardware is always there to help you fix a leaking tap. Our philosophy soaks up the Talbot Street spirit: Good food, done well at affordable prices. And always served with a friendly smile.
