Swenys
F.W. Sweny and Co. opened its doors as a dispensing chemist in 1853. A fortuitous location in the heart of Dublin’s south inner city, it lies within 100 yards of the birthplace of Oscar Wilde. Up until 2009 Sweny’s , but it is now more a place for nostalgia and a place to chat. Made famous by James Joyce’s Ulysess and described in sumptuous detail within the novel, today the shop is maintained by volunteers to ensure that Swenys charm continues.
Here you will find a selection of second-hand books and the perfect location for daily readings of Joyce’s works. Not forgetting, of course, the lemon-scented soap that made the shop famous!
