Across the road from the fine architecture of St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral stands the impressive grounds of the Department of Education which was originally the site of the first stone-built mansion in Dublin, Tyrone House, which still stands there to this day. The Richard Cassells’s designed building was purchased by the state in 1835 and is now also home to the Model School and the Scoil Caoimhín Gaelscoil.

In the middle of the grounds stands a distinctive bronze sculpture of a human hand which  is called “The Wishing Hand” and was cast by Dublin sculptor Linda Brunker.
